Elizabeth (Pickman) Gouverneur (1760-1831)

Mrs Elizabeth (Pickman/Peachman) Gouverneur

She was the daughter of Mrs Cornelius Stevenson by her first husband. She married Isaac Gouverneur, of New York, June 15th, 1777, on the Caribbean island of St. Eustatius. They had one daughter but the marriage ended in divorce after it was discovered that Elizabeth had not only had an adulterous affair with a Mr Cadette, but also had a baby by him - a boy who was later paid off with $1,000 when he made a claim on Gouverneur's estate. Her mother left her an annuity of $250 and she lived into old age before eventually becoming insane. She died at the Lunatic Asylum in Bloomingdale.
