He was a Director of and one of the principal shareholders in the Western Bank of Baltimore. He was also a Director of the Baltimore Fire Insurance Company and in 1860 was elected as a Member of the Baltimore City Council. He married his cousin, Mary Elizabeth McElderry (1817-1895), and they had one daughter.
