Frank Sanford Gorton (1847-1910)

Frank S. Gorton, of Chicago; Treasurer of the Western Edison Electric Company

He was born in Rochester, New York, and was graduated from Rochester University. In 1887, he was active in organizing the Chicago Edison Company. He became President of the Chicago Forging Company; Secretary of the Standard Pneumatic Tool Company; and, Treasurer of the Western Edison Electric Company. He was described at his death as, "a man of unusual distinction in advancing the development of electric light and power in Chicago and the West". He married Emma, daughter of Anson Stager, Co-Founder of Western Union and sister of Ellen, the 4th Marchioness of Ormonde. They lived at 2120 South Prairie Avenue, next door to Philip D. Armour, and their 276-acre farm "Edgewood" at Wheaton, Illinois, was "one of the most beautiful in the west". He was "a well-known horseman" and retired to Edgewood, taking apartments at the Congress Hotel in Chicago for the winter. They died without children.
