He was the only American-born son of his father. In 1835, he inherited 42,000 acres in New York, making him one of the wealthiest landowners in the country. But, his speculations in the hop market failed and when he died in 1889 he was declared bankrupt. His daughter-in-law stepped in and saved the ancestral home.
