Henry A. Tandy (1853-1918)

He came to Lexington shortly after the end of the Civil War and found employment as a brick mason, eventually becoming a foreman.  In 1892, he founded Tandy & Byrd, Contractors, and when he died he was considered the wealthiest African-American in Kentucky. In 1898, his firm built the Lexington Court House that had the reputation of being one of the largest and finest courthouses in the United States. His son attended Cornell University and became the first African-American Architect in New York.
