He was a childhood friend of Andrew Carnegie and together they founded the Carnegie Steel Company at Pittsburgh which they sold, giving Phipps a fortune of $50 million. In his retirement, he became well known as a philanthropist and gave over $7 million to charity. In 1918, he came in at 23rd (tied with James B. Duke, Jacob Schiff, George Eastman, Pierre S. Du Pont, Louis F. Swift, Julius Rosenwald and Mrs. Lawrence Lewis) on the first ever Forbes Rich List with an estimated personal fortune of $50-million. He married Anne Shaffer and had five children (listed above).
