He was born at Montreal and educated at Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh; and Rugby School, England. He returned to Montreal and joined the family firm, the Allan Shipping Line, becoming a partner in 1881. He was in charge of the Boston office (1887-1892) and was Chairman of the Allan Line Steamship Company at London (1909-1917). In Montreal, he lived first at 289 Stanley Street before moving to 682 Mountain Street and was a member of the Mount Royal Club; Montreal Hunt; Forest and Stream; Royal Montreal Golf; Canadian Auto; Montreal Jockey; Mount Bruno Country; and, the Royal Automobile Club in London, England. His eulogy said in part that, "he was sincere, tolerant and wise and possessed of great courage and faith". In 1884, he married Margaret, daughter of William Rae, Agent to the Allan Line at Quebec. They had one daughter, Rachel Allan, who married Major George Wheler M.C., of Otterden Place, Kent.
