Isaac Winslow Clarke (1754-1822)

Isaac W. Clarke, British East India Merchant of Boston, then Montreal

He was born at Boston and grew up to be one of the seven British East India Company merchants licensed to sell tea in Boston. His sister, Susanna, was married to the famous portraitist John Singleton Copley and they were the parents of the 1st Lord Lyndhurst. His father was one of the four co-signees (who included Henry White of New York) of the tea that was thrown into the harbor at Boston. As a Loyalist, Clarke left America for London where he lived with the Copleys. In 1812, he was appointed Deputy Commissary-General at Montreal during which time he was the 1st President of the Montreal General Hospital. He died at sea while travelling back to London in expectation of receiving a knighthood, survived by a son and two daughters.
