He was born at London, Ontario, son of James Brakenridge Strathy, Collector of Customs at London, and Elvira, daughter of Dr Hiram Davis Lee, originally from Hartford. In 1885, he was married at Elmbank in Montreal to Margaret, the youngest daughter of Alexander Robertson. They were the parents of six children.
