James Bowen (1740-1796)

He was Anglo-Irish and was living/stationed at Kinsale, Co. Cork, in the 1780s. However, he was born at Salisbury in Wiltshire which strongly suggests his father was in the army. He is almost certainly related one way or another to the Bowen family of Bowen's Court, Co. Cork, but his precise ancestry remains unclear. He married "the beautiful" Isabella, daughter and co-heiress of Richard Sheffield Cassan of Sheffield House, Co. Laois (the Cassans also married into the Bowens of Bowen's Court), and they were the parents of three sons: Henry entered the army and died in India; George was a Captain in the Royal Navy and retired to Laurencetown House in Ireland; and, Edward became Chief Justice of the Superior Court of the Province of Quebec.
