James Rogers (1675-1733)

He was born at New London, Connecticut. In 1708, he was admitted to the bar and in 1714 he was confirmed as Captain of the local militia. He was Deputy to the General Court and later elected Speaker. He lived on a farm at Great Neck (Waterford) which he sold for £2,970 before moving to Norwalk. He was married twice. He had seven children by his first wife, Elizabeth (d.1713); and, a further five children who survived infancy by his second wife, Freelove Hurlbut, who was 19-years his junior.
