John Cayley (1730-1795)

Merchant & Consul-General to St. Petersburg

He was a great-grandson of Sir William Cayley, 1st Bt., of Brompton, Yorkshire, who was created a Baronet (for which he paid £1,095) for supporting the Royal cause during the English Civil War. John was a Member of the Russia Company and a senior partner in the firm of Ritter, Thornton, Cayley & Co., which became better known as Thornton, Cayley & Co. He was a member of the English Club in St. Petersburg where he was a founding member and Master of "the Perfect Union", a Freemasons Lodge.
