John Kean (1756-1795)

of Charleston, South Carolina; U.S. Continental Congressman

He was born at Beaufort, South Carolina. His father was from the West Indies and said to have been of Scottish descent. Towards the end of the Revolutionary War, Kean was elected a Member of the Continental Congress and he later became the first Cashier of the Bank of the United States in Philadelphia. In 1786, at New York City, he married Susan, daughter of Peter van Brugh Livingston. They had one son.
