John Stamper (c.1700-1782)

John Stamper, Merchant, Alderman & Mayor of Philadelphia

He was a wealthy merchant who came from England to Philadelphia and was involved with commercial shipping in the West Indies. He was a member of a notable Quaker banking family that was intimately linked to many of London's principal banks, notably through the Blands and Gurneys. He was almost certainly the brother of Mrs Elizabeth (Stamper) Bland. In Philadelphia, he was Councilman (1747), Alderman (1755) and Mayor (1759), and Stamper's Street is named for him. In 1761, he paid £1,100 for the whole front of Pine Street between 2nd and 3rd Street (460-feet with a depth of 142-feet). He lived on South 2nd Street and was the father of three children: (1) Hannah, married her cousin Elias Bland, son of the already mentioned Mrs Elizabeth Bland and brother of John Bland of Bland, Barnett & Hoare, Bankers, of London (2) Mary, married William Bingham (3) Joseph, married Sarah, daughter of Judge Joshua Maddox
