Joshua Johnson (1742-1802)

He was the brother of Thomas Johnson, Maryland’s first elected Governor and a Member of the Continental Congress. He moved from London to Nantes in 1778 where he became one of the leading American merchants doing business in France, acting as commercial agent for the State of Maryland and the U.S. Congress. He was the father of First Lady Louisa Johnson, the wife of U.S. President John Quincy Adams. He married Catherine Nuth of London and had eight surviving children (listed).
