Leslie Gault (1787-1843)

Merchant & Shipowner at Strabane, Co. Tyrone

He was an Anglo-Irish merchant and shipowner in County Tyrone. He started as a general trader in Strabane who branched out into shipping, sending emigrant ships to New Brunswick and the United States that returned with timber and grain. In 1841, he lost three ships at sea as well as further money on grain and timber due to falling markets. In 1842, he emigrated with his wife and seven surviving children to Lower Canada to make a fresh start in Montreal, but died nine months later of cholera. His wife, Mary, was a daughter of Matthew Hamilton of Trentagh House, Co. Donegal.
