Peter Schermerhorn (1749-1826)

He, like his father and grandfather, owned ships that traded between New York City and Charleston, South Carolina. During the Revolution, he moved his family and his ships up the Hudson to Hyde Park to protect them from the British. After the war, he moved back to New York City. He lived at 68 Broadway and started the firm of Peter Schermerhorn & Sons with his two sons. In 1795, Peter and his brother, Simon, bought 150-acres in Brooklyn for use as a family summer home. In 1771, he married Elizabeth, daughter of Abraham Bussing, Dry Goods Merchant, of New York. They were the parents of six children, five of whom (listed) lived to adulthood.
