Rebecca (Howland) Roosevelt (1831-1876)

She was born in New York, the daughter of Gardiner Greene Howland, one of the co-founders of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. In 1853, she married James Roosevelt (1828-1900) and they had one son, "Rosey" Roosevelt, the half-brother of the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Rebecca lived with her husband at Springwood in New York and they travelled to Europe at least once every year.
