He was in business with his brother, Peter, and together they acquired the nucleus of the Goelet property empire in Manhattan. He married Margaret, daughter of Thomas Buchanan and they had two children: a daughter (Mrs Kip) and a son who predeceased them. His widow's fortune was estimated at $100,000.
