Robert Walker Graham (1825-1904)

of Athelstan, Huntingdon Co., Quebec & 1006 Dorchester Street, Montreal

He was the son of Hugh Graham and was born at Edinburgh in Scotland. He graduated as a Veterinary Surgeon from the University of Edinburgh and emigrated to Canada in 1844. He bought land at Athelstan in Huntingdon County, Quebec, where he was involved in agriculture and industry before moving to Montreal in 1870 where he went into business with his sons as chief partner of Graham & Co., owners of the Montreal Star. In Montreal, he was living at 19 Union Avenue in 1896 and died at 1006 Dorchester Street. In 1847, when he was resident at St. Michaels, Huntingdon County, Quebec, he married Marion, youngest daughter of Col. Thomas McLeay Gardner who had been unsuccessful as a farmer in the East Lothians before emigrating in to Huntingdon, Quebec, where he built a house at what would become Athelstan. They had three sons and a daughter including the 1st Lord Atholstan.
