His father, Samuel Cabot, and his grandfather, Thomas Handasyd Perkins, were two of the wealthiest men in 19th-century Boston. He counted among his brothers the lawyer, philosopher, and author James Elliot Cabot and the architect and artist Edward Clarke Cabot.
