Sir George Lindsay Holford (1860-1926)

He was the great-grandson of Peter Holford who added to an already substantial fortune by supplying London with fresh water through a canal that made him an "immense fortune". In 1838, George's father inherited a million pounds from an uncle and in the following year Westonbirt, the seat of the Holford family since 1666. George Holford was an intimate of the Royal Family and served as equerry to Prince Albert Victor until his death in 1892 and was afterwards equerry to Albert's father, the future Edward VII, and "one of his closest friends". After Edward died in 1910, Holford was equerry-in-waiting to Queen Alexandra and extra-equerry to King George V.

In 1912, he married Mrs Susannah Menzies, a daughter of the shipping magnate Arthur Wilson and the widow of "Hellfire Jack" Menzies. They lived between Westonbirt and Dorchester House in London. They had no children of their own but Holford was fond of his three stepsons who included Sir Stewart Menzies. He left each of the Menzies boys something in his will but as per his father's his will, his £3-million fortune as well as both his estates and the Holford Collection went to his nephew and heir, Lord Morley.
