He was Clerk of the Court at the Salem Witch Trials (his brother Samuel was one of the Judges) but did not subscribe to the hysteria and took in one of the girls suspected of witchcraft whose convulsions stopped soon after. In 1682, he married Margaret Mitchell. They had 17-children of whom nine survived to adulthood.
