William Henderson (1767-1825)

He was the son of a physician from Dundee in Scotland. He was a merchant in New York City and a member of the Tontine Coffee House. He invested in large amounts of land and sold the island on which Hunter Island Mansion was built. The town of Henderson in Jefferson County, New York, is named for him. In 1797, he married Sarah, daughter of merchant, landowner, and Congressman William Denning. They lived at Ardenia before moving to Bellefield in 1820. They were the parents of three surviving children, two sons (William and James) and a daughter, Mrs Theodore Lyman II.
