He built a "magnificent country home" on the Middleton land at Goose Creek in Berkeley County that he named Crowfield for his English estate, Crowfield Hall in Suffolk. The ruins of Crowfield can still be seen today. He sold his 1,800-acre plantation in 1754 before retiring to Crowfield Hall in England.
