Alexander Allan House
112 King Street East, Brockville, Ontario
Built circa 1875, for Alexander Rae Allan (1845-1901) and his wife, Eva Belford Travers (1856-1912). They were married at Brockville in 1874 and although Alexander was the eldest son of the richest man in Canada and one of the richest men in the British Empire - Sir Hugh Allan - Alexander himself was, "not cut out for business" and his house was modest in comparison to those of his siblings. He and his wife lived here quietly with their only son, Travers Allan, who lived in Montreal but likely maintained the house. Travers Allan never married and in 1923 was touring the world with his cousin, James Bryce Allan, when he was murdered near Luxor, Egypt....

According to the Brockville Architectural Committee, after Sir Hugh Allan died in 1880, "he left the house and land to his son, who was already occupying it," implying that his father had built the house as a wedding present. They go to say that, "at that time there were stables at the back and a paddock on the east side along Ormond Street". It is designed in the Italianate style, or what is also called the Eastlake or Stick style: "Apart from the general features of the Italianate, such as heavily bracketed eaves, a square tower, rounded off windows, the features of the Stick style are seen in the narrow elongated windows and preponderance of vertical lines". Today it's split into apartments.
