He was born at The Hermitage in Nashville. He was educated the Universities of Tennessee, Paris, and Southern California before becoming a teacher. He fought in World War I where he was gassed in the trenches. He moved to Los Angeles in the 1920s and played various bit roles in several Hollywood productions. He married and was survived by two sons and two daughters.
