Edward Wales Root (1884-1956)

He was born at Southampton, New Jersey He graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. He started life as an editorial writer for the New York Evening Sun and Harpers Weekly, but on the outbreak of war joined the Red Cross. He returned to his old school in 1920 to become a lecturer in art, a position he held until his retirement in 1940. He became a prolific collector of paintings and objets d'art, and in retirement he was appointed Trustee of the American Federation of Arts and a member of the Addison Art Committee. In 1949, he was appointed Consultant of Art by the Munson-Williams-Proctor Art Institute in Utica. He married Grace Cogswell and died at New York City.
