Elizabeth Ellen Auchincloss (1844-1925)

Elizabeth Ellen Auchincloss, died unmarried

She was known affectionately known to her nieces and nephews as "Aunt Ellie". Her niece said of her that she, "was the fairy godmother of our childhood, from whom flowed birthday, Christmas and Easter presents galore, as well as good times. She replenished the “Precious Drawer” with all sorts of fascinating small gifts, and kept the doll’s house in her bookcase up to date. She took care of “Grandma,” and was the perfect example of selflessness and generosity in a very clannish and long-lived family. We all remember her with love and veneration, and pride to have been privileged to call her “Aunt Ellie.” Her greatest interests were the family and her church, and the New York City Orphan Asylum (now the Graham School), and of course Grandma. She loved to talk family gossip, and lots of genealogical history died with her. Like Grandma, she was always knitting socks and blankets for the new family babies. She was a truly out-giving lady".
