Gilbert Robertson (1759-1836)

Gilbert Robertson, British Consul for New York and then Philadelphia

He was a Scottish gentleman who failed in business in New York before being appointed British Consul. Lord Castlereagh replaced him and he was moved to Philadelphia as British Consul there. He married the widow of Isaac Gouverneur and was stepfather to his young children. Robertson lived fashionably and expensively therefore when he died in 1836, "much to the surprise of everybody" he left $70,000 which he bequeathed entirely to his eldest stepchild, Mrs Francis Rawle Wharton.
