Henry D. Cruger (1800-1867)

He was born in St. Croix and was brought up in South Carolina before graduating from Columbia College in New York. He was a close friend of the Cooper family, notably James Fenimore Cooper, who in his last novel, The Ways of the Hour (1850), based the character Mary Monson on Cruger's wife who he divorced in the same year.
