Herman Gouverneur (1745-1773)

He was a merchant "in general business" at Hunter's Quay near the Coffee House and a Member of the New York Chamber of Commerce. He traded with the West Indies and the Island of Curacao where his grandfather Isaac Gouverneur established a large plantation. He also owned "large commodious store houses" on Gouverneur's Wharf on the corner of Front Street and Gouverneur's Alley. In 1773, he was lost at sea when his ship embarked from Curacao but was not heard of again. In June the following year his executors put 6,068-acres of land he owned in Kayaderosses, Albany County, up for sale. This valuable tract of land was part of his large estate. He had two daughters and was survived by one, Alida, who married her cousin Isaac Gouverneur.
