James Carson Brevoort (1818-1887)

He lived in Brooklyn and was President of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in New York. He was a well-known collector of rare books. From his father, he inherited about 6,000 volumes, mostly Americana, which were collected in Europe during the turbulent years of 1810 until 1832. He added to the collection so that by 1875 it contained about 10,000 volumes, many of them very rare and costly. He married Elizabeth Lefferts in 1845 and had one son.
