John Carter (1613-1669)

He was born at Shadwell in London. He emigrated to Virginia in 1635 and settled in Norfolk County. In 1642, he was granted 6,160-acres in Lancaster County where he established the Corotoman Plantation on the Rappahannock River between Carter's Creek and Corotoman River. He was chosen to command the troops against the Rappahannock Indians in 1654. From 1653, he served as a Justice and represented Lancaster County in the House of Burgesses before becoming a Member of the Governor's Council. He gave the land and oversaw the construction of Christ Church at Lancaster. He was married five times and had at least nine children of whom four (listed above) certainly lived to adulthood - including Robert "King" Carter.
