He was the natural son of the former King of Spain and Naples who acknowledged him as such and made him his private secretary. When Bonaparte fled to America, Maillard and his pregnant wife dutifully accompanied him and continued to manage his affairs at Point Breeze, Bordentown, New Jersey.
