Robert Beverley (1673-1722)

He was born in Middlesex Co., Virginia, and was educated in England. Returning to Virginia, he was a Scrivener to the Secretary of the Colony before his appointment as Clerk to the Legislative Committee. By 1696, he was Clerk of the General Court, Clerk of the Council and Clerk of the General Assembly. He represented Jamestown in the House of Burgesses. He inherited the "Poropatank" plantation and "Beverley Park". He was one of the so-called "Knights of the Golden Horseshoe" being among the first white men to see the Shenandoah Valley and wrote the "History of Virginia" that was published in London in 1705. He married Ursula, daughter of daughter of William Byrd of Westover, and they were the parents of one son (listed above).
