Robert Morgan Gibbes (1796-1864)

of Baltimore, New York City and Newport, R.I.

He was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and was the uncle of Charlotte Gibbes who married John Jacob Astor III. Shortly before his marriage in 1825 he moved to Baltimore for business and took a townhouse on Gay Street. His business partners were Robert Oliver and John Oliver, father and uncle of his wife. After their marriage they lived at his wife's childhood home, "Green Mount" (see images). They left for Europe in 1848 and when they returned in the 1850s they moved to New York City and kept a summer home "Buenavista" on the corner of Rhode Island Avenue and Buenavista Street in Newport, Rhode Island.
