Rupert John Cochrane (1799-1851)

Rupert J. Cochrane/Cochran, of New York & London

He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and came to New York City from at least 1827 where he lived until 1845 when he retired to England. He is buried at St. Mary's Churchyard in Battersea, London. According to tradition, the family initially spelled their name "Cochran" before changing it to "Cochrane". In 1835, he married Isabella, younger daughter of Thomas Bayard Clarke of New York, part heir to Chelsea in Manhattan built by his grandparents. They were the parents of five children.
