Russell Sturgis (1805-1887)

China Merchant in Boston & Senior Partner of Baring Brothers & Co., London

He was one of the best known merchants of his time, not only in Boston, but in Canton and most notably London. He was born at Boston and graduated from Harvard (1823). He was admitted to the bar but preferred business and became a partner in the firm of Jonathan Amory & Son. He then set up on his own account as Russell & Sturgis in Manila and Russell, Sturgis & Co. in China. In 1849, he joined Baring Brothers & Co. in London and after the death of Thomas Baring in 1873 became the senior partner. He lived between 17 Carlton House Terrace in London and Givons Grove House near Leatherhead, Surrey. He married three times and had 7 adult children (listed).
