Stephen Heward (1776-1828)

Major Stephen Heward, J.P., of Toronto; Auditor-General of Upper Canada

He was born at Friar Wingate, near Lanercost in Cumbria. He was the younger brother of Sir Simon Heward (1769-1846), K.B., F.R.C.S., of Carlisle, and the brother-in-law of Captain John O'Brien (d.1804) R.N., of Fareham, Hampshire. Major Heward was commissioned into the Grenadier Guards before transferring to the Queen's Rangers. During the War of 1812, he captured Fort Detroit and was awarded with a significant land grant at York (Toronto), where he settled. He married Mary, sister of both Chief Justice Sir John Beverley Robinson and Mrs D'Arcy Boulton of The Grange
