He was born in New York City and graduated from Columbia College (1869). He entered the wholesale dry goods business and for many years until his death was a partner in his uncle's firm, William Iselin & Co., of 357 Fourth Avenue. He was also a director of the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railway Company; New Rochelle Water Company; and the Neptune Realty Company. He was a keen yachtsman and the holder of the No. 1 Membership Card of the New York Yacht Club which he joined in 1872. He married Alice, a grand-daughter of the redoubtable Mary Mason Jones immortalized as Mrs Manson Mingott in Edith Wharton's (who was her cousin) famous book, The Age of Innocence. William died at 720 Park Avenue, survived by three sons.
