He was born in Montreal and educated at Rugby School in England. In 1882, he joined the family's Shipping Line at Boston under his first cousin, Bryce. In the following year, he came to Winnipeg as the Line's Western Agent and a director of the Vulcan Iron Works. From 1904, he entered the insurance business and was a senior partner of Allan, Killam & McKay. He was President of the Union Bank of Canada, President of the Board of Fire Underwriters, and a director of the Canadian Mortgage Association and the Royal Crown Soap Company. He was "a keen sportsman with a love of horses". He was President of the Winnipeg Jockey Club and a member of the Manitoba Club, St. Charles Country Club, St. James Club, and the Montreal Club. In 1909, he married Minnie, widow of Albert Clements Killam. They lived at 6 Roslyn Road, Winnipeg, with her two children by her first marriage. Winnipeg's Allan Street is named for him.
