Freame Mount

Cootehill, Co. Cavan

Built in 1772, for Charles Mayne (1727-1777) and his wife (and first cousin), Dorothea Mayne. Standing on 513-acres, it enjoys a magnificent view over the Dartrey estate that belonged to Charles' cousin, Viscount Cremorne, and for which Charles was land agent. He named his new home for his cousin's new wife, Philadelphia Hannah Freame, grand-daughter of William Penn, the Founder of Pennsylvania, and a grand-niece of John Freame, co-founder of Barclays Bank. It was home to the Mayne family for 3-generations and saw 36-Maynes born here over that time.
