Frederick Rhinelander Newbold (1853-1882)

He was born in New York City. In 1882, he married Maud Spencer Ledyard of Washington, D.C., but they divorced just ten years later without issue and she went to live in London with her mother. In New York, he lived at 52 Catharine Street. He founded the New York Horticultural Society and frequently invited its members up to his country home near Poughkeepsie, "Fern Tor," which enjoyed an uninterrupted four mile view over the Hudson River. During the 1920s, he wintered in Bermuda and he died at his summer cottage in Beverly Farms, Massachusetts. Having no children, he left his estate to his celebrated first cousin, Edith Wharton.
