He served as aide-de-camp to General (later Vice-President) George Clinton during the Revolution. He received 28,000-acres from his father and the hamlet of Livingston in Columbia County was both founded by him and named for him. He built Oak Hill in 1793 and by his two wives he was the father of nine children and one stepdaughter, children's author Susan Anne Livingston (Ridley) Sedgwick.
