Lawrence Lewis (1767-1839)

Col. Lawrence Lewis, of Woodlawn House, Fairfax Co., Virginia

He was a nephew of George Washington and served as his uncle's deputy and secretary at Mount Vernon. He married a great-granddaughter of 5th Lord Baltimore and as a wedding present, Washington gave him part of the Mount Vernon estate on which he built Woodlawn (see images), designed by William Thornton, the first architect of the Capitol.
