He was born "Nicholas van Rosenvelt" at New Amsterdam (New York), the son of Claus (Claes Martenszen Van Rosenvelt, d.1659) who emigrated from Holland. Nicholas is the common ancestor of the two Presidents Roosevelt. His son John is the great-x3 grandfather of the 26th U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt; and, his son Jacobus is the great-x3 grandfather of the 32nd U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
