Philip Lydig (1745-1784)

He became a Master Baker and at the time of the Revolution his was the largest bakery in New York City, which then numbered 8,000 residents. During the war, he was reputed to have engaged in espionage on behalf of George Washington. He was chief among those who helped fund the construction of the Lutheran Church at the corner of Frankfort and William Streets, where he was buried in 1784. In 1763, he married Margaret, daughter of Peter Grim and widow of Philip Ebert.
