Winfield House

Built from 1936, for Barbara Hutton (1912-1979), the grand-daughter of F.W. Woolworth who was dubbed the "poor little rich girl" and famously spent $25 million in one decade. It stood on the site of Hertford Villa which later became known as "St. Dunstan's". During World War I, the New York financier Otto Kahn - the model for "Mr Monopoly" - lent it to a charity for the care of blind servicemen....

After St. Dunstan's was destroyed by fire in 1936, Barbara Hutton bought the ruins and commissioned the English architect Leonard Rome Guthrie of Wimperis, Simpson & Guthrie, to build her this 35-bedroom home surrounded by 12-acres of gardens - which after those at Buckingham Palace continue to be the second largest private gardens in London. At the end of World War II, Hutton donated the property for a token $1 to the U.S. State Department and since 1955 it has served as the U.S. Ambassador's Residence.
